3. ATOM COURSE

The Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) Course is a patented course of the American College of Surgeons offered jointly by the American College of Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons every quarter at the ATOM LAB, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana.

It is designed for Fellows in general surgery, urology, paediatric surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeon as well as other surgeons interested in comprehensive management of the trauma patient.

Only 4 trainees are selected for each course; each trainee is supervised by an instructor.

Every trainee is given the 400-page ATOM textbook by Lenworth M. Jocobs, Ronald Gross and Stephen Luk to study before the course.

The course is divided into theory and practical sessions. The theory part is a quick review of the ATOM textbook while the practical part is a comprehensive operative management of various sharp and blunt injuries of all the solid organs of the abdomen, the diaphragm, small and large intestines, aortic and IVC injuries and penetrating injuries of the heart. All these injuries are produced on anaesthetized 50 kg pig whose abdominal organs approximate to those of adult human subject. The injuries are promptly repaired and the animals are revived at the end of the session. Each trainee is guided by an instructor from the American College of Surgeons.

A certificate of completion form the University of Connecticut, USA is issued at the end of the course to successful candidates.

Course fee: US$500. Candidates could be self-sponsored or sponsored by their institutions.
