COURSE
The Advanced Trauma Operative
Management (ATOM) Course is a patented course of the
It is designed for Fellows in
general surgery, urology, paediatric surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeon as well
as other surgeons interested in comprehensive management of the trauma
patient.
Only 4 trainees are selected
for each course; each trainee is supervised by an
instructor.
Every trainee is given the
400-page ATOM textbook by Lenworth M. Jocobs, Ronald Gross and Stephen Luk to study before the course.
The course is divided into
theory and practical sessions. The theory part is a quick review of the ATOM
textbook while the practical part is a comprehensive operative management of
various sharp and blunt injuries of all the solid organs of the abdomen, the
diaphragm, small and large intestines, aortic and IVC injuries and penetrating
injuries of the heart. All these injuries are produced on anaesthetized 50 kg
pig whose abdominal organs approximate to those of adult human subject. The
injuries are promptly repaired and the animals are revived at the end of the
session. Each trainee is guided by an instructor from the

The maximum number of participants per course is 4. There is 1 instructor for 1 participant.
1. Participants are to give a firm undertaking that they will attend the course. Participants who withdraw less than 4 weeks from the day of the course may not get another opportunity.
2. At the moment we are training the trainers and therefore the course is open to Post fellowship surgeons.
3. Participants will have to submit their postal address and email.
4. Participants shall then do an on-line assessment, including a pre-course multiple choice assessment.
5. Participants shall then read the ATOM book.
6. As the course starts at 0730 participants are to be seated at the 2nd Floor Surgical Conference room by 0715.
7. The six 30-minute lectures are given with a short cocoa break in the middle of the session.
8. Participants who have not done the pre-test cannot attend the lectures.
9. The lectures are followed by lunch and the porcine lab work.
10. In the lab you will perform laparotomy on a fully anaesthetized pig. Your instructor shall discuss the differences between the pig and a human being with you.
11. The participant shall then be given a clinical scenario to think about while waiting.
12. The participant shall then leave the operating room for the corresponding injury to be created.
13. When the participant is recalled to the operating room he will be required to make a diagnosis, that is identify the injury/injuries, discuss the clinical effects and discuss the management. He will then be made to repair the injury as discussed in the ATOM book.
There are about 9 injuries to all the abdominal organs and the heart.
14. The candidate is expected to do a post course assessment.
15. There is a post conference discussion of the course.
16. The conference fee is $500 and for this each participant is given a personal copy of the book on ATOM. This fee should be paid on arrival for the course.
17. On successful completion of the course successful participants will be issued with a certificate from Hartford University.
18 Participants shall make their own accommodation arrangements. The Principal
Instructor may be able to book a room for any willing participant at the Dean’s
Guest house in Korle Bu when a room is available.
